EVERGREEN MIGRATION DELAYED AGAIN

We wanted to inform you that there will be another delay for the Evergreen software coming to our C/W MARS catalog. The

Central/Western Massachusetts Automated Resource Sharing (C/W MARS) system, accessible online at: http://www.cwmars.org will continue to provide access to all of the library resources in our area, but the software is changing to a system called Evergreen.

When the new system is online, the Friends of the Library will be offering public information sessions. If you encounter any difficulty, I’m here to help.

Barbara Friedman, EPL Director 413-423-3348

On Monday, December 12, 2011,

C/W MARS launched a redesign of its OverDrive Digital Catalog, http://digitalcatalog.cwmars.org. All the information you are used to having available will still be there, but in a new, cleaner layout. Additional enhancements such as browsing specific format collections (EPUB, MP3, Kindle), suggested read-alikes for titles, and new filters for searching will be introduced. Patrons should find the new catalog a great tool for finding downloadable ebooks and audiobooks.

Please Welcome Cynthia Rucci

Cynthia Rucci, our new library technician joined us in November. Cindy has a wealth of library experience. She is a resident of Greenfield and a graduate of Smith College, and worked at Smith’s Music Library. She brings other computer skills and a customer service personality to the job. If you haven’t been to the library in November, stop by, say “hi”.

Enjoy our holiday decorations and all the library has to offer to make your spirits bright during this season.

New Technology Update….

This month we are showing off our new ebook readers. During December, we will feature “playtime” with our new devices. Then, in the new year, we will be circulating the ebook readers for those who request a book that we can’t provide in hard copy.

If you missed our November session of downloads and donuts, you can still learn how to download FREE ebooks from our library system C/W MARS through the Overdrive Digital Catalog at http://digitalcatalog.cwmars.org

Let us know if you need help.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU CAN DOWNLOAD EBOOKS AND AUDIOBOOKS AT HOME TO YOUR COMPUTER OR TO MOST EBOOK READERS, NOW INCLUDING THE KINDLE.

Kindle books are now available on the C/W MARS Digital Books website…. Start at:

http://digitalcatalog.cwmars.org

The transaction will be FREE! Kindle ebook loans are for 7 or 14 days.

Not every ebook title will be available in Kindle format, nor will patrons have access to all Kindle titles on the Amazon website. They are still limited to the C/W MARS OverDrive Catalog.

Patrons will be able to use the highlighting and annotation features of their Kindle with library ebooks, and if they choose to check out or purchase the title at a future date, everything they annotated will be available again.

Wireless sync of Kindle titles will only be available through wifi. Kindles with only 3G, or no wifi access, can still transfer their Kindle title using the USB cable, similar to other ereaders.

EVERGREEN MIGRATION

Ho! Ho! Ho! A gift from C/W MARS coming soon, and appropriate to the season, it is called Evergreen.

Central/Western Massachusetts Automated Resource Sharing (C/W MARS) accessible online at: http://www.cwmars.org will continue to provide access to all of the library resources in our area, but the software is changing to a system called Evergreen. The Massachusetts Library System, a recently merged state agency, is now providing delivery for libraries throughout the state. EPL greatly appreciates the services of these 2 state agencies.

When the new system is online, if you encounter any difficulty when placing holds from your home computer or when trying to renew need assistance, I’m here to help.

Halloween! Open 1 to 7 PM

The library will be open its
usual hours during Trick-or-Treat Come to the Erving Library in
costume and receive a treat and have your photo taken for our scrapbook. Come
in a book inspired costume and receive a special prize.

October 2nd -
Friends Monthly Craft Days – Don’t forget our 1st Sunday of the
Month Craft Days sponsored by our newly formed Friends of the Library Group,
led by Katie Stetson and Rebecca Hubbard

Crafts are easy enough for a toddler to make with the help of a
parent, but even adults love the crafts that Katie and Becky create. There is
no age limit, and if you see craft materials on our craft table after the first
Sunday, feel free to pick up the directions and leave the library with your own
creation. Creativity doesn’t stop after childhood. Enjoy!

October 13th –
Thursday 6:30- Jr. Book Club

Jr. Book Club – What it’s all about?

It’s about reading just for the fun of it. It’s about discussing
books you like to read. It’s about enjoying the library with friends. It’s
about sharing ideas and a snack with kids that like sharing ideas. It’s about
entering contests about literature. It’s a monthly get-together for children in
grades 3 through 6. Join us!

EVERGREEN SOFTWARE DELAYED

In the September issue of Around Town, we told you that our
library software that connects our library to hundreds of other libraries in
Central and Western Massachusetts (C/W MARS), was going to change in October.
This transition has been delayed until early winter. Please talk to the Library
Director if you have concerns about downloading your library history.

Programming Preview

The Erving Library staff and the Friends of the Library put a lot of planning and effort into the summer programs, and we are already planning some exciting events for Summer 2012.
Here are just some of the ideas that are being considered:

Yes, ‘shiver me timbers’ we are planning a pirate party for summer of 2012, along with a drumming programming for teens and adults, and an animal program for children of all
ages. We will let you know our final plans and dates in the May issue of Around
Town. If you have a talent that you would like to share with Erving residents,
please let us know, or if you would like to help with setting up for programs,
publicity, or providing refreshments, we would love to hear from you.

Before we get to summer, we are working on the following fall and winter programs:

For children:

Erving Library will be hosting programs sponsored by the
Children’s Network, a series of Sunday programs in November and a pajama
time featuring snow stories December 15th

Jr. Book Club continues

The public & school libraries will be working together on a
reading program for children

For adults:

We’ll be rescheduling the Civil War Program that was postponed
this summer

Celebrate the New Year!Rejuvenate your skin!

Another countywide book discussion series

And, possibly another art session with Greg Maichack

Donuts and Downloads (ebooks & audiobooks)

The New C/W MARS Catalog

(Coming Fall 2011)

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Limit your searches to materials that are currently available (on the shelf).

See all available formats of a title with one search by using Group Formats and Editions. Don’t care if you get the print or CD version? Place a single request for all acceptable formats—get the first one that is available!

Change your search from your local library collection to materials at all C/W MARS libraries (Central & Western) with just a couple of clicks.

Create your own user preferences for when you are logged into the catalog—unique usernames, library searches, and more!

Save titles to lists, for yourself or to share with other people through an RSS feed.

PATRON ACCOUNT

Access your patron account through the catalog by clicking “My Account” on the C/W MARS Catalog Homepage or in the links on the left of the other pages.

Use your library card and assigned password (last four digits of library card for existing patrons, assigned at library for new patrons). The system will ask you to create a new password the first time you log in.

DASHBOARD

Click through all your account information from one screen: Account Summary, Items Checked Out, Items On Hold, Fines, Account Preferences, My Lists.

SPECIAL FEATURES in your account include:

Account Summary—Create your own username for login instead of your library card number, update your password or email address at any time.

Account Preferences—Settings such as number of search results, search location and range can be personalized while you are logged in.

My Lists—Your lists can now be made public to share with others. Options to access them include through links or an RSS feed.

BASIC SEARCHING

The Homepage for the C/W MARS catalog allows you to search for books and other items at your library or at any library in the C/W MARS network. It contains a single search box for you to enter search terms.

Search by:

Keyword—finds the terms you enter anywhere in the entire record of an item. This includes title, author, subject, and other information.

Title—finds the terms you enter in a title of an item.

Author—finds the terms you enter in the author of an item. You can type first name, then last name, or reverse.

Subject—finds the terms you enter in the subject of an item. Subjects are categories assigned to items, in this case the Library of Congress Subject Headings.

Series—finds the terms you enter in the title of a multi-part series.

FORMATES

You can also limit your search by format:

Books

Large Print Books

E-Books

Audiobooks (CD & Cassette)

Video Recordings (VHS, DVD, etc.)

Music

Electronic Resources (databases or other resources available electronically in the library or online)

LIBRARIES

If you are using the catalog in a library or accessing your library’s catalog from its homepage, the search will return items for your local library. If your library has multiple branches, the result will display items available at your branch only. To see results from all your library’s branches (e.g. Amherst, Springfield, Worcester), click “Choose a library to search” on the catalog homepage and pick “Town/College”, then the town your library is in. You can also search libraries in your region (Central or Western) or all of C/W MARS.

ADVANCED SEARCHING

Access the Advanced Search page by clicking “Advanced Search” on the C/W MARS Catalog Homepage or in your Search Results screen.

By default, the search results are in order of greatest to least relevance. You can change this and select to order results by relevance, title, author, or publication date.

Group Formats and Editions

Click this checkbox to have all formats and editions of the same title grouped together as one result. For example, the DVD, audiobook and first and second print editions of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets will appear together.

Limit to Available

Click this checkbox to limit to items that are currently available. Titles without available items in the library will not be displayed.

Search Filters

You can limit your searches by Item Type, Language, Audience and Publication Year.

The Advanced button next to the filter name creates a more detailed menu to choose from. For each filter type, you can select multiple criteria by holding down the CTRL key as you click options.

If you are searching a particular library, you can also limit your search by Shelving Location.

EBOOKS, AUDIOBOOKS & VIDEOS

The use of downloadable Ebooks, Audiobooks, and Videos from your central library site at C/W MARS nearly tripled during the past fiscal year! From 78 downloads in FY10 to 210 in FY 11. We expect this trend to increase as more people buy e-readers and discover the free resources online. Visit the C/W MARS catalog at: http://digitalcatalog.cwmars.org/

New to ebooks? Ask us at the desk and watch the Around Town for dates of our Downloadables & Donuts workshops to be held in November

Get ready for Changes to C/W MARS … A new Library software system is coming: Evergreen.

This fall, the catalog will get a brand new look, and some great new features!
The Erving Catalog will continue to be located at:

BUT….
Your Reading History
and Current Wish Lists won’t
move with us, so save them now! There is
a button to choose “Export List” at the top of each list. We
recommend that patrons choose “Brief Display” for their list; this
will give you the title, author, and publishing information. These can be sent
to an email address as a text file or displayed on the computer for printing.

Patrons who wish to export their Reading History or Wish Lists should
do so by September 30th, 2011.

New Catalog: What Patrons Need To Know

Public Library users will see some changes to the C/W
MARS catalog in October 2011 as they move to the new Evergreen system. There
will be some differences

All library items in one place! Both Central and Western Massachusetts libraries will
have their items in one catalog, so you can easily request from both.

Patron Dashboard. Your library account will show all checkouts, holds, fines, etc.
in one place.

RSS Feeds for lists. You can create a “published” list to share
with others.

Outstanding Holds. Your current requests will
transfer to the new catalog

Change to Current PIN. You will be required to create a new password when you
login for the first time.

Programming, Programming, Programming, Programming….

At the Erving Public Library we love to bring programs to our community. During FY11, there were forty programs offered at the library. Some traditional programs, like story hours aimed at our youngest users, encourage them to enjoy reading and their library. Jr. Book Club attempts to keep students reading at the age when they are most likely to stop reading for pleasure. And our big summer programs attract all ages just for fun.

Sometimes our library is filled to capacity with participants. Over 50 people attended the Animal Experience sponsored by the Cultural Council this summer and we had a lively crowd for the Stupendous Mr. Magichead sponsored by the Children’s Network. Throughout the past fiscal
year, there were 575 attendees at programs. We are grateful to those who help with sponsoring, hosting, presenting, and setting-up for these programs. Please visit us on Facebook (search Erving Public Library) to see all their smiling faces.

We are looking forward to another great year of programs. Please help us by telling us what you think of our programs and give us your suggestions. Tell us what you liked or disliked. The easiest way is to write us a brief note to ervinglibrary@netscape.net or call me at 413-423-3348. An anonymous note can be dropped in our green suggestion box in the library.

We apply for Cultural Council in October.
So hurry! We want to hear from you. Please give as your feedback soon.

It takes a village to run a libray summer reading program….

Thank you to our performers and presenters, event planners, and volunteers,
